Preview: Hordes of Hunger (Steam)

Beating bums and, or, monsters in medieval periods is better than beating bums at the best that a game in the hack n slash, or beat n up, genre can provide us and in the demo of Hordes of Hunger we have a taste of the best of this world with roguelite to progress in it. Check out my first impressions of the game.

What is Hordes of Hunger

Hordes of Hunger is a 3D hack-and-slash action and survival game in which you fight for survival facing waves of increasingly dangerous monsters. Build your playstyle from a variety of weapons and special attacks, then gain new abilities in each match to refine it. Complete missions and rescue others to earn resources and discover the mysterious origins of the evil you face.

The game experience

When we start the game we will command Mirah, a warrior who will have to defend her homeland from the dangers that the hordes of monsters are causing and also face stage bosses. Before we go to the phases we can interact in the village which, initially, only has Mirah, her father and her mother. They sell items and skill progression in addition to having the blacksmith to craft weapons.

Going to the stages we will have to face some missions to complete. In the demo, we have the Village released, the scenario is visually familiar to lovers of medieval scenarios and who have taken a look at some less famous souls like.

The gameplay may initially seem complicated but it is simple if you use a controller, I highly recommend it. Mirah can run, jump, dodge, attack with light and heavy attacks, and has special abilities. To make your capabilities better, at each level we have upgrade options to improve our attacks, status or health.

This roguelite element gives Hordes of Hunger its charm. You can calm down if, in your case, when reading or hearing the word roguelite you already fear the difficulty that may come. Some games abuse it, in fact, others manage to strike a balance. At the end? It can't be too easy, there needs to be a challenge, the progression in this demo seemed good to me.

Mirah's attacks are ok and yield simple and unbridled combos similar to Musou games (Life's Dynasty Warriors for example) and this starts to deliver points that require adjustments in the game. It was cool to play Hordes of Hunger but it will need some fine tuning, which I noticed in the hours I played.

As the camera is under our control, it can get in the way several times, especially if the next maps follow Vila's idea of having corridors and closed places, the horror of the camera in a 3D platform game ends up appearing here, brutal!

The initial special attack has a direction problem and appears to be tied to the camera. Maybe it doesn't make sense, however, that's the feeling I had. When we activate the ability, Mirah ends up performing a piercing attack in the best Kenshin Himura o Battousai style, however, without going where we want. Mirah will always go upwards when activating the skill, that is, regardless of where the character is looking, aiming, projected and zaz, the attack will always go further north than what we have on the screen and this can, and will often, break strategies for clearing enemies from some directions.

The game's currency is feathers that enemies drop, as well as giving experience when defeated and exp runes drop. With each level acquired, we will choose an extra skill, or reinforce one already acquired, improve the attack or health to the maximum you can survive or level up in the phase.
